    ***** Range Re-Opening Update, April 24, 2020 *****

The Golden Gun Club Board met at a Special Meeting on April 23, 2020 and unanimously approved re-opening the Club effective Monday, April 27, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. Members may use all Club facilities, and the Shotgun fields will be open to Members and the Public.

Members must engage in best practices while at the range: Members who are not feeling well or in a vulnerable population should stay home; maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet; wearing of masks on the range is mandatory per Public Health Order 20-26; Members must supply their own wipes and clean all surfaces they touch while at the range; frequent hand washing is strongly suggested.

The Board voted to authorize the Shotgun Manager to supervise the entire facility and maintain compliance with best practices. If the facility becomes too crowded, the Manager may require Members to leave the range area and wait until space is available. The Manager has the authority to require non-compliant Members to leave, and any argument may result in suspension or termination of membership after a hearing before the Board.

Over the past several weeks, some Members have stated that the Club could remain open if best practices are demonstrated-here is the Membership's chance to prove it. Please be advised in the event that the facility draws large crowds or high numbers of non-compliant Members, or in the event that state or federal authorities impose restrictions, the Board may close the facility again.

Due to ongoing social distancing requirements, competitions, both on the rifle range and shotgun fields, will remain cancelled through the end of May. The Board is meeting again in early May and has been and is continuously monitoring the situation. When competitions are resumed, a notice will appear here on the website and on the Range Information Line (303-512-9742), both of which should be checked frequently.

    ***** Range Closure Update, April 9, 2020 *****

The Golden Gun Club Board of Directors met in a special meeting on April 9, 2020 convened to discuss the continuing closure of the Club due to the Colorado Stay at Home Order (the "Order"). After discussion, the Board voted that the Club remain closed until the Order is lifted, or until the activities at the Club are more broadly defined or permitted.

The Board wishes to thank those Members who have expressed support for this difficult decision, and acknowledges the input of a lesser number who have expressed disappointment. The Board takes both seriously.

In the Board's analysis at this time, the range does not fit within the exception of a Critical Retail as it is not a "firearms store." While the Order allows for outdoor activities such as "walking, hiking, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, biking or running, but all playgrounds, picnic areas, other similar areas conducive to public gathering, and attended areas shall be closed." Further, it does not include activities that would violate the Social Distancing Requirements defined in the Order. Given the lack of exceptions for shooting ranges, the number of Members of GGC, a group of which may constitute a public gathering on attended areas, the potential to violate social distancing, and the possible exposure of Club employees, the Board determined that remaining closed is in the best long-term interests of the Club. Further, DHS guidelines categorizing shooting ranges as essential do not carry the force of law (by their own definition) and were not adopted by the State of Colorado.

In addition, members of the Board have been in contact with officers of similar sized gun clubs, which also remain closed. The concerns expressed by the GGC Board are not limited to our Club.

In sum, we are all in an unprecedented situation. The Board understands the disappointment of not being able to go out and shoot (the Board is in the Club to shoot as well, not just to serve as officers), but also takes its responsibilities to the long term interests of the Club seriously. By order of the Board, therefore, the Club will remain closed as provided herein.

    ***** RANGE CLOSURE UPDATE, APRIL 1, 2020 *****

The range will remain closed through the expiration of Colorado's Stay at Home Order. Some have emailed the Board to state that ranges are classified as essential services in Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines. We are aware of this information.

The DHS guidelines are suggestions to state and local governments and do not carry with them legal authority or force of law. From the first page of the DHS document (bold in original):

This list is intended to help State, local, tribal and territorial officials as they work to protect their communities, while ensuring continuity of functions critical to public health and safety, as well as economic and national security. Decisions informed by this list should also take into consideration additional public health considerations based on the specific COVID-19-related concerns of particular jurisdictions.

This list is advisory in nature. It is not, nor should it be considered, a federal directive or standard. Additionally, this advisory list is not intended to be the exclusive list of critical infrastructure sectors, workers, and functions that should continue during the COVID-19 response across all jurisdictions. Individual jurisdictions should add or subtract essential workforce categories based on their own requirements and discretion.

The guideline identifying ranges as a critical function was not adopted by the State of Colorado. While gun shops are considered critical retail, Colorado's order does not exempt shooting ranges. We understand that various enforcement measures may be implemented. The Board's duty is to the health, safety and longevity of the Club. As such, the Board voted to remain closed during the Stay at Home Order. As the Order evolves or is amended, the Board will consider the same. Please check this site for updates, and a reminder that the Range Information Line (303-512-9742) is the official source of closure and cancellation notices.
